Description
This volume is fully bound in red leather over boards, with gillt to all 3 edges of the text block. Both front and rear past-down and free end-page are comprised of 1 page of marbled paper (French Curl on Turkish?) which has been sewn onto the binding. The front paste-down has 3 labels; in the centre is a previous owners bookplate, which is in the form of a medieval seal with ribbon, around the edge is "Be Mindful To Unite" in capitols with "J. Dawson. Brodie" written in ink underneath. On the top left side; "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall", underneath this and partially over the bookplate is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". Attached to the front free end-page is a typed note (see below). On the reverse of he frontg free end-page is a second previous owners stamp "John. A. Cockburn His Book" around an image of a cockeral. In pencil, top left "ef o" and bottom left "162" and other marks. On the adjacent page is "10/" top right and "302 Sterne (L) 280" bottom right. On the obverse of the title page is an ink stamp "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" in a circle with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside it. On the reverse of the back free end-page are pencil notes; "NC/87" top left, "m-e" top right, "24s2482" bottom left and other marks bottom right.On the bottom left of the rear paste-down is a small label in the shape of a stack of 4 books with "Kerr and Richardson, Wholesale Stationers and Act. Book Makers 89 Queen St. Glasgow" in capitols.
