The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 9. The First Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather over boards with mottled red edges to the text block. On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; within the centre is a large previous owners bookplate comprised of 3 arrows with a rose either side above "John Linley Peel, Halifax" which is above "52/823/828" which is written in blue crayon. Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath and partially covering the bookplate is "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". On the front free end-page written in pencil on 4 lines "Thornton", "KM 6 Nowell Smith variant G KM IX-1b". Written in ink on the top of the title page is a previous owners signature "Nicolson Calvert" and on the reverse of the title pageis a circular stamp with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. Laurence Sterne has signed "L. Sterne" in ink on the top of page 1 (not typical).The binding of this volume is taller than the rest of the set and the second panel a label reads "Trist Shandy" (affected by scorching) in the third panel down in impressed gilt is "9". The spine has 5 raised bands with gilt lines either side. The board faces are decorated by a border of 2 impressed gilt lines, and the board edges have impressed decoration. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page. IS p.1
