The World's Classics. XL. The Works of Laurence Sterne I - Containing The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. First Edition.

This volume is bound in red cloth/buckram over boards with a decorated spine. The front paste-down has 1 label on the top left side "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall". Written in ink on the front free end-page is "Here is good news, Trim - the first 'World's Classic's edition of Tristram Shandy, presented with affectionate homage to the Library of Shandy Hall, over a jolly lunch with Kenneth Monkman in Heffers Bookshop, Cambridge on Friday 22nd January 1982 - by Frank Collieson". Facing the title page is a page containing other World Classic's available. The title page has an editors device incorporating the initials G & R. On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp in ink with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. To the top of this page is printed "'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy' was first published in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767. In 'The World's Classics' it was first published in one volume in 1903." To the bottom of this page is "Printed by R.& R. Clark Limited, Edinburgh."
