A Supplement to the New and Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences

Size: large folio. Fully bound in leather with a double gilt border decoration to front and back board with decoration to the foredge. Edges of the text block are red mottled. Head and tail bands are of red and cream alternating threads. The spine has 6 raised bands. In the second panel is the title piece on a red morocco background with three gilt border lines "Supplemt to Universal Dictionary" in the third panel down the label is missing and illegible. Leather is badly worn and torn. On the rear board is the sticker "Lot 293". Front paste down in the top left has a label for Shandy Hall Library. Printers devices throughout. Frontispiece is full page by F M Lacave sculpt with quotation from Dryden "Search more deeply for the cause: and study nature well and nature's laws". This volume is tied.Kenneth Monkman notes 'See proposals for this supplement in the Daily Advertiser January 3rd '54'. Note the fine plates througout the volume, some coloured - list of illustrations to the front of the volume, 44 plates total including 11 coloured plates.
