This little room contains the world’s largest collection of editions of Sterne’s works, including translations into other languages and significant works of criticism.

Here he wrote most of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman; A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy; The Sermons of Mr Yorick; Letters to Eliza and other correspondence.

Books that Sterne used for reference, or extracts that found their way into his own writing, are also included in editions that would have been familiar to him; these include Cervantes, Rabelais, Burton, Locke, Chambers Dictionary and of course, the Bible.

Over the Georgian fireplace are three prints: an engraving of Sterne as painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds; a print by Louis de Carmontelle; and a detail of ‘Sterne and Death’ by Thomas Patch.
