This bawdy and entertaining book was very popular in its own day, running to three editions between 1684 and 1697. Even so it is now an extremely rare and valuable book, for long virtually unobtainable. The present reprint is of the first edition (1684-5), the first in its entirety since 1697.

The Praise of Yorkshire Ale is divided into three parts. The first gives the name to the book and is a rollicking narrative of a Rabelaisian jaunt by Bacchus and hid court. They journey to Northallerton, Easingwold, and York, consuming astonishing quantities of the ‘humming Yorkshire ale’ in each town. The second and third part consist of a Dialogue and a Glossary and are important, being the first appearance in print of Yorkshire dialect.
