Tome Premier. This volume contains the Life and Memoires of the Author, and the first part of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy.

This volume is bound with marbled paper (papier tourniquet design) over boards, with a red leather spine. The edges of the text block are mottled, and slightly rough where they have been cut after binding.The front paste-down has 2 labels, on the top left is "From the Library at Shandy Hall", and pasted centre is a hand written note in blue ink "Presented to the Library at Shandy Hall by Jean-Claude Salle, Dijon, July 2nd, 1969." On the obverse of the title page is an ink stamp "Laurence Sterne Trust" in a circle with "Shandy Hall Library" inside. The frontispiece is opposite the title page and is a full page cut of Laurence Sterne, sitting at a desk and writing. This is circular within a page with an impressed border. Underneath the cut to the left is "Misbach del.t" and right is "S. A. *** Sculpt." Underneath these in larger letters is "Laurent Sterne" This frontispiece has been cut and bound not in line with the rest of the textblock, and it has also off-set onto the adjoining title page.
