Artists and Writers in Residence

The Laurence Sterne Trust has developed a reputation for commissioning new work from artists and writers inspired by Laurence Sterne. These artworks are often unique to Shandy Hall.

Artists are supported for specific periods of time to develop their ideas and practical work. Experimentation and invention are actively encouraged. See previous artists-in-residence.

The Trust runs artists’ residences on-site for those working in a wide range of disciplines – from erasure poetry, to video games, to needlework, to ceramics. Accommodation is provided in Wolfson Cottage, a charming converted 19th-century stone barn set in the two-acre garden at Shandy Hall. Included are a kitchen, spacious living room, bathroom and bedroom. There is an oil-fired Aga, central heating, washing machine, wi-fi connection and parking for one car. The accommodation is self-catering and ground-floor.

Calls for applications are announced as projects permit, on social media and our website. Short residencies are regularly run in partnership with Leeds Beckett University.
