Sermons By the Late Laurence Sterne, A.M. Prebendary of york and Vicar of Sutton on the Forest, and of Stillington, near York. A New Edition.
This volume is fully bound in leather over boards. The front paste-down has 2 labels on the top left side; "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall", underneath this is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". This paste-down has been glued over the old one and bleeding though it are a series of calculations. On the front free end-page are a series of notes written in ink, the first three are biblical quotes which are divided up by lines of ink (see below).On the top right corner in pencil is "£14 N13". Beneath these, also in ink is "M?? Mary Howlett September (?)" underneath and badly smudged with "James Howlett 108,5" underneath and adjacent, also in ink in a different hand on 3 lines are 3 biblical references. On the obverse of the frontispiece written in ink on 3 lines "Fanny Banyard Horningsea The gift of her cousin Howlett. January 1839". The frontispiece is a full page cut showing Sterne holding a book with bookcases in the background. This image is within a roundell, with a swag of floral decoration above and stands on a plinth with "Laurence Sterne, A.M. Prebendary of York etc etc" underneath. Printed underneath this in smaller writing is "Engraved by Heath from a picture by Hopkins".
