The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 1. The First Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather with red mottled edges to the text block. On the front paste-down there are 2 labels; top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". There are also 7 lines of pencil notes "Investigate w.marks on pp 5, 21 and 35 (A3, B3, C2) the only ones bearing resemblance to C4 E (? B or just p R) ; these sheets have the feel of slightly thicker, better paper". At the bottom of this page, also in pencil is "868 Timff". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. On the rear paste-down in pencil is "xoywwff ska bt ask" in pencil. The spine has 5 raised bands, and in the third panel down is "I" in gilt. The board rims have gilt decoration.
