The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 5. The First Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather with red mottled edges to the text block. On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; in the centre is a previous owners bookplate around a heraldic device is the motto "Boutez en Avant" with "James Smith Barry" underneath, all in capitols. Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath and partially covering the book plate is"Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. On the top right of the rear paste-down in ink is "H/c C/h" The spine has 6 raised bands with gilt lines either side. The volume piece is in the third panel down, and just visible "5". The board faces have a gilt border of 2 lines which are not square with the volume and the rims have the remains of impressed decoration. On the top right hand corner of the title page is Sterne's signature which reads 'L.Sterne'. Although this book was written in 1761 it was not published until 1762. IS p.1
