The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 8. The First Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather with red mottled edges to the text block. On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; in the centre is a previous owners bookplate around a heraldic device is the motto "Boutez en Avant" with "James Smith Barry" underneath, all in capitols. Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath and partially covering the bookplate is "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". In pencil top right is "Bit 326 KM 4". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The spine has 5 raised bands with gilt lines either side. The title piece is in the volume panel down, and just visible "8". The board faces have a gilt border of 2 lines and the rims have the remains of impressed decoration. There are partial watermarks on the paste-downs.
