A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick. Volumes 1 and 2. The Fourth Edition.
The volume is fully bound in leather (calf) over boards. The front paste-down has 3 labels; to the top left hand corner is "T. Connolly Bookseller, 10, Up. Ormond Quay, Dublin" and underneath "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall". Immediately below is the second label "Property of the LS Trust 1986". Also on this page are various notes. Written in ink is "Sentimental Journey with MS observations by John Lord Clonmell". Underneath this is a previous owners signature, also in ink "Edwd. Mangin" (who was the Rev. of Bath - wrote life of George III and edition of Richardson in 19 vols; KM notes think edition is Dublin but James Fleming was son of Carnegy of Pater-noster-row 1769). In pencil at the bottom of the page is "John Scott. E. of Clonmell (1739=1793, Irish Judge)". On the front free end-page written in ink in copperplate is " His Eliza Mrs. Draper, formerly a Miss Sclater to whom, I have seen letters of his written in the years 1767 and 1768". Underneath the long note on the reverse of the Advertisment page is a circular ink stamp with "Laurence Sterne Trust, Shandy Hall" with "Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. On the top of the first page of text, page 7, are a series of small printers flowers/devices within a floral border. The spine was comprised of 5 raised bands with the title piece in the second block down. The spine is in poor condition. This volume currently resides inside a false-book box with fake blue marbled (combed) boards and leather spine.
