The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 3. The First Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather over boards with mottled red edges to the text block. On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; within the centre is a previous owners bookplate, underneath a heraldic device is "Robert Willis Blencowe". Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath and partially covering the bookplate is "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". Above these in pencil is "KM 17 State III". On the front free end-page is a second previous owners bookplate comprised of 3 arrows with a rose either side above "John Linley Peel, Halifax" which is above "52/823/822" which is written in blue crayon.On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The spine has 5 raised bands with gilt lines either side. In impressed gilt in the third panel down is "3". The board faces are decorated by a border of 2 impressed gilt lines, and the board edges have impressed decoration. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page.
