Frontispiece of Laurence Sterne (Reynolds pose) in a decorated roundall with the characters of Uncle Toby (consulting a map) & Poor Maria beneath - photogravure by Maurice Leloir. New York 1884 to the foot of the spine. Title piece 'A Sentimental Journey Sterne'. Full page illustrations with tissue guards numerous vignettes. With 12 photogravure plates by Maurice Leloir each with a duplicate printed in bistre and with numerous in-text illustrations. The De Grande Luxe edition limited to 100 copies, this being number 70. With an original watercolour sketch of a woman and child by Leloir on the half-title signed and dated by the artist. Large Quarto New York: J. W. Bouton 1884. The book is bound in contemporary full green crushed morocco by Zaehnsdorf, with five raised bands, with elaborate gilt decoration to the front and rear boards and the compartments on the spine. With inner dentelles in gilt, top edges gilt, leading and lower edges uncut. A few light impressions to the boards, spine and markings of the boards a little toned with age but overall a most handsome copy. Purchased in 2018 with the support of Friends of the National Libraries.
