The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 3. A New Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather over boards with a green tinge to the text block edges. On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; within the centre is a large previous owners bookplate comprised of a heraldic device with "Generosus Nascitur Non Fit" in capitols within a scroll above "Rev. Wm Wharton". Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986".Underneath the bookplate written in pencil is "a descendant of the W's of Skelton, given to the LST by him". On the top right of the front free end-page in pencil is "TS 196". Written in ink on the reverse of the front free end-page is "RL" (See other Wharton owned books). On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The spine has 5 raised bands with floral decoration in between. On page 248 is a pencil note "end of vol 4 in orig. edn".The title piece is in gilt capitols in the second panel down "Tristram Shandy" on an ox-blood background. Underneath this, also in gilt capitols is "Vol III" both are surrounded by a gilt border of 3 lines (which may have been re-touched when repairs made as far brighter than the other gilt).The board edges also have impressed decoration. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page.
