The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 4. A New Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather over boards with a green tinge to the text block edges. On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; within the centre is a large previous owners bookplate comprised of a heraldic device with "Generosus Nascitur Non Fit" in capitols within a scroll above "Rev. Wm Wharton". Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath and partially covering the bookplate is "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". On the top right of the front free end-page in pencil is "TS 197". Written in ink on the reverse of the front free end-page is "RL" (See other Wharton owned books). On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The spine has 5 raised bands with floral decoration in between. The title piece is in gilt capitols in the second panel down "Tristram Shandy" on an ox-blood background. Underneath this, also in gilt capitols is "Vol IV" both are surrounded by a gilt border of 3 lines (which may have been re-touched when repairs made as far brighter than the other gilt).The board edges also have impressed decoration. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page.
