The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 1. The Ninth Edition.
This volume is fully bound in marbled leather over boards and the front and rear end pages and paste-downs are comprised from one piece of marbled paper (Turkish pattern ?). On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; within the centre is a large previous owners bookplate comprised of a heraldic device with "Magnum In Parvo" in capitols within a scroll above "E.G. Graham Little". Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath and partially covering the bookplate is "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". On the reverse of the front free end-page in pencil is "6 vols aff" and "6 vols £10". On the top right of the adjacent page in ink is "E. Graham Little" with "T5200" in pencil underneath. Various notes in pencil have been removed from this page leaving feint traces. On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The spine has 5 raised bands with decoration in between comprised of urn's. The title piece is in gilt capitols in the second panel down "Tristram Shandy" on an ox-blood background. Underneath this, also in gilt capitols is "Vol I" on a green background, both are surrounded by a gilt border of 2 lines The board edges also have impressed gilt decoration. The head and tail band are comprised of alternating blue and cream threads. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page.
