The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 1. A New Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather over boards On the front paste-down there are 3 labels; within the centre is a large previous owners bookplate comprised of a heraldic device with "Spero" in capitols within a scroll above "James Hunter Hafton" written underneath and to the right is "Ma.25". Top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath and partially covering the bookplate is "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". Top left and right are annotations on ink, likely book sellers; these have off-set onto the adjacent page. On the front free end-page in pencil is "6vols £50.00 set". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The spine has 5 false raised bands in gilt. The title piece is in gilt capitols in the second panel down " Shandy" on an ox-blood background. Underneath this, also in gilt capitols is "I".The board edges also have impressed gilt decoration. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page. There is advertisement on the back of the title page "Lately published,".
