The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. The Third Edition. Volumes 1 and 2.
This volume is fully bound in marbled leather over boards. On the front paste-down there are 2 labels; top left "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". The reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. On the top right of page 3 is a previous owners signature in ink which has been trimmed, possibly "Robert Evans". The frontispiece to Volume 1 depicts 'Trim Reading the Sermon' with top right "Frontispiece Vol. 1" and bottom centre "Vol.2 page 96". (No illustrator/engraver details but based on 2nd state as hat and clock present.) The spine has 6 raised bands. The title piece is in gilt capitols in the second panel down "Tristram Shandy Vol I & II" on a dark green background, surrounded by a gilt border. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page. On the bottom of page 136 volume 1 is a publishers flower/device.
