The Works of Laurence Sterne; Containing The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gent, A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, Sermons, Letters etc. With a Life of The Author, Written by himself.

This volume is quarter bound in ox-blood leather (spine and corners) over marbled boards (French Curl on Nonpareil pattern). The paste-downs and end-pages are comprised from single sheets of dark teal coloured paper and the edges of the text block have red mottling. The front paste-down has 2 labels on the top left side "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" underneath is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". Written in ink on the top right of the front free end-page is a signature which is illegible. Written in pencil on the first blank page is "London 1st ed Works in 1 vol" and "£12.00", on the reverse of this page, also in pencil is"6/" On the reverse of both the title pages is a circular stamp in ink with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. Underneath the second stamp is printed "B. Bensley, From Bolton Court, Fleet Street, (Printer Woking)". On the top right page is a former owners signature "C.J.A. Brodie 12 August 1839". The spine is decorated with 5 bands and the title piece is gilt impressed capitols "Sterne's Works". The head and tail bands are comprised of alternating bands of yellow and crimson.
