The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne. Volume I. Temple Classics, First Edition.

This volume is bound in dark blue buckram over boards with a decorated spine and the publishers device impressed into the front cover. The front paste-down has a Temple Classic's logo printed in dark green with "Laurence Sterne Born 1713 Died 1768" and "First Edition Published AD 1759 (Published at York) Two Books". Also on this page to the top left are pasted 2 labels "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" and underneath and partially covering the printed label is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". Written in pencil on the front free end-page is "2 vols 6.00 set" and "1st Edition of Temple Classics, 1899. BL says (ed. Waternold) with quaint side notes, but none for marbled page".The frontispiece is an illustrated/cut depicting "Shandy Hall Parsonage House, Coxwold", this faces the title page which has a black border of flowers in art nouveau style. On the reverse of the half title page is a circular stamp in ink with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside.
