Physiognomy; or the Corresponding Analogy between the Conformation of the Features and the Ruling Passions of the Mind. Translated from the Original Work of J.C. Lavater, By Samuel Shaw Esq.

This volume is fully bound in marbled leather over boards. The front paste-down has 3 labels; on the top left side is a square label with "Sold by G. Cawthorn Bookseller, Binder, Stationer, Printer & Publisher; British Library, 132 Strand. Schools supplied on the lowest terms" surrounding this in the border is also "Books bot. sold or exchand. Great allowance to Merchants & Gentlemen going Abroad". Underneath this are"From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp in ink with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. Printed onto the bottom of the rear paste-down is "K". The frontispiece is comprised of 6 profile images of the following; "Albert Drurer, Moncrif, Dr. Johnson, Shakespeare, Sterne and S. Clarke six". The title page also has a small cut/illustration, with "Lavater Contemplating a Bust" underneath. Both of these images have off-set onto one another. There are also 4 other plates which depict other aspects of male physiogomy. Plate 2 faces page 44, Plate 3 faces page 84, Plate 4 faces page 119, Plate 5 faces page 185. The spine has 5 false raised bands comprised from single gilt lines. The title piece is missing. The board rims have impressed and gilt decoration and the head and tail bands are comprised from alternating cream and red threads. ND in book but has been associated to 1800.
