The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Illustrated by John Austen. First Edition.

Hardback hollow-back un-cut volume. This volume is fully bound with black cloth-covered boards and also a black paper cover with the top edge of the text block stained red. The front and rear end pages are comprised of single sheets of dusty pink paper with an oval of printed illustrations relating to the volume and a roundall in the centre with "Alas Poor Yorick". Pasted onto the top left corner of the front paste-down is a small paper label with "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall". Written in pencil on the top right of the front free end page is "£3.50". Stamped onto the bottom of the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with inside "The Kenneth Monkman Collection". The hardback spine has "Tristram Shandy. Laurence Sterne. Illustrated by John Austen" to the head with "The Bodley Head" to the foot and also a floral device to the centre, all in impressed gilt. The front board has a gilt impressed panel in the centre depicting a rider and horse/mule (same as the image on page 349) ; there is further impressed gilt decoration to the head and foot of the front board. This information is repeated on the black paper cover with also "25/- net" on the spine.
