The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy Gentleman. Volume 1.
This volume is fully bound in leather over boards. The edges of the text block have red mottling. The front paste-down has 4 labels; within the centre is a large previous owners book plate with a heraldic device with "Regulier et Vigoureux Pacem Amo" in capitols within a banner above. Underneath on 2 lines is "William Scott Kerr of Chatto". On the top left side "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" and underneath this is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986" and on the bottom right is a small label with "R.D. Steedman Bookseller Newcastle upon Tyne" in blue on three lines. Also on this page in pencil is "Engraved portrait" and on the front free end-page in pencil is "No black page". On the reverse of vol. 1 title page is a circular stamp in ink with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. On the rear paste-down in pencil is "Coll KM" and on the rear free end-page with a di-axis of 180 to the rest of the text and written in ink is "Whom". Continued pagination through vols 1 and 2.
