The Works of Laurence Sterne; In Four Volumes. Containing The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gent, A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, Sermons, Letters etc. With a Life of The Author, Written by himself.

This volume is bound in calf leather over boards. The paste-downs and end-pages are comprised from single sheets of marbled paper (Dahlia pattern and each volume in this set has the same marbled paper). The edges of the text block are stained a deep yellow. The front paste-down has 2 labels on the top left side "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" underneath is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". Written in pencil on the obverse of the front free end-page is "RY/xs", "6/118" within a circle and "4 vols £50-00 set". Printed in small capitols on the bottom left of this page is "W. Nutt. Binder". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp in ink with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. Underneath this is printed "Luke Hansard, Printer, Great Turnstile, Lincoln's-Inn Fields". The spine is decorated with 5 false bands comprised of stamped gilt decoration with urn like images in between. The title piece is gilt capitols on an ox-blood background "Sterne's Works" with the volume piece on dark green (brown?) "Vol I." The board faces have a border of impressed gilt floral decoration, the rims are decorated with gilt lines and the area of leather which folds over onto the paste-down is also decorated. The head and tail bands are comprised of alternating bands of yellow and crimson.
