The volume is bound with plain board (cardboard) covers and a paper spine. On the front paste down are 3 labels; within the centre is a pasted a label with "The Stourport Permanent Subscription Library. Allowed to be kept 7 days". On the top left hand side are 2 labels ""From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". The title page has a printers device with "Miscellanies" inside. After the title page is a second title with a small oval cut depicting Sterne with "Reynolds pinx" and "Ridley Sculp". On the reverse of this page is an ink stamp "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" in a circle with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside it (this has been stamped twice slightly apart). The contents page for Extracts from Tristram Shandy is on page 82. Facing this page is the second frontispiece for the Essays volume; This depicts a Classical scene of "Alexander & Septimus" in an octagonal sided frame with "Corbould del" to the left and "Hopwood sculp" to the right. Both frontispieces have off-set onto the adjacent pages.
