The Sermons of Mr. Yorick. Volume 1. Seventh Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather over boards. The front paste-down has 3 labels; Within the centre is a large bookplate of a previous owner with "James Duckworth Wood". On the top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall", and underneath this is (and slightly covering the bookplate) "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". On the top of the front free end-page are pencil notes on 3 lines "SYI-7", "copy A 4 vols" and "vols 5-7 probably 1769 (5?)"On the obverse of the title page is an ink stamp "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" in a circle with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside it. There is a printers device/flower underneath the title which is the same as the one in volume 2 (volume 1 is darker). On the rear paste-down written in pencil top left is "1713-1768". The frontispiece is full page and depicts Sterne within a roundell with "Laurence Sterne A.M. Prebendary of York etc" in capitols within a cartouch underneath. Above and to the right is "Frontispiece, Vol I", bottom left is "Reynolds pinx.t" and bottom right is "Ravenet sculp." This frontispiece has off-set onto the adjacent title page.The catchword is to the bottom right of every page.
