Adaptations of Laurence Sterne’s Fiction: Sterneana, 1760-1840

Description

Bound in turquoise boards with cover illustration showing a detail from a satirical print referring to ‘Tristram Shandy’. This book examines how Sterne’s early readers responded to his fiction by exploring its adaptations in numerous forms, including texts, drama, and visual culture. It reveals how diverse reactions to Sterne’s works and to his own reputation were, and the highly inventive ways in which readers expressed their opinions about the life of both the author and his characters. Mary Newbould’s research drew extensively on material belonging to The Laurence Sterne Trust held in the Shandy Hall collection.
