A scarce example of an owner’s bookstamp. William Beach, Bristol’ has not been identified but could be a circulating library. The text ‘Oft you may read, if not abuse’ invites the reader to take care of the book whilst it is in his possession.  No:34. appears to be a separate stamp and identifies each volume.

History

The book was purchased from the Monkman Estate in 2008. The bookstamp features in vols 1 & 3-6, each numbered sequentially.
